Using Novell’s Virtual Loadable Modules (VLM) with Platinum

The version numbers of the VLM modules which have been reviewed are 1.20 for all of the VLMs except the NETX.VLM which is 4.20.

The VLMs have been used in accessing servers running both Netware 3.11 and 3.12. Netware 4.x has not been reviewed at this time.

Platinum versions used in our review included version 4.02, 4.1 and 4.1a. Platinum for Windows version 4.1 was also reviewed.

Btrieve version 5.10a was reviewed as well as Btrieve.NLM version 6.10c and Brequest versions 6.0 and 6.10e.

The high degree of configurability of the VLM setup does not allow a blanket statement that every possible permutation may be supported. Below are two examples of the relevent portions of the NET.CFG file used in our review of the VLM implementation. The first takes advantage of some of the configuration options offered by the VLM.

The second is a fairly simple installation.

Sample 1 of the NET.CFG

NetWare DOS Requester

FIRST NETWORK DRIVE=H

USE DEFAULTS = OFF

VLM = CONN.VLM

VLM = IPXNCP.VLM

VLM = TRAN.VLM

VLM = NDS.VLM

VLM = BIND.VLM

VLM = NWP.VLM

VLM = FIO.VLM

VLM = GENERAL.VLM

VLM = REDIR.VLM

VLM = SECURITY.VLM

VLM = PRINT.VLM

VLM = NETX.VLM

VLM = AUTO.VLM

SHOW DOTS=ON

DOS NAME=MSDOS

MESSAGE LEVEL=4

SIGNATURE LEVEL = 0

NETWORK PRINTERS = 5

PRINT BUFFER SIZE = 156

PRINT HEADER = 200

PRINT TAIL = 100

SEARCH MODE = 5

Netware Shell

EOJ=OFF

FILE HANDLES=60

TASK MODE=2

SIGN 386 MODE=1

Sample 2 of the NET.CFG

NetWare DOS Requester

FIRST NETWORK DRIVE=H

USE DEFAULTS = ON

PB BUFFERS = 0

Netware Shell

EOJ=OFF

FILE HANDLES=100

SHOW DOTS=ON

PREFFERED SERVER = ALF

It should not be assumed that the above examples are the recommended configurations but are merely examples which processed problem free in our review. A number of other factors may impact the configuration of the NET.CFG for any specific client site or workstation within a given site.
